And so it begins…

August 24, 2011

Yesterday was the first day of school and it went well.  I can say that it definitely gets easier with experience.  There was nothing too exciting, which is definitely a good thing, but I do have a few things to share.

There are always no shows on the first day of school.  Most of these moved and never notified the school.  I had some no shows in most of my class and I was hoping for several in my class of 33.  I walked in and could tell that everyone was there, since all of the desks were full and there was a kid left over.  I said in a semi-sarcastic tone, “Yay, it looks like you are all here; all 33 of you.”

During one of the passing periods, a weird kid (I knew him from last year, so I knew he was weird.) came up to me and said, “I really want you.”  I shot him a WTF look and he replied, “I mean, I really wanted to have you as a teacher.”  “Oh darn,” I thought and I’m sure I made some sort of smart remark.

Some of you may have seen the Oreo brownies that I made the other day.  I took them to lunch yesterday.  After lunch, Ms. S. came to my room and asked for a brownie.  I replied, in front of the class, “Did you hear about the surprise inside?”  I immediately noticed some funny looks from the kids.  My voice got real high and squeaky and I said, “No.  Wait.  No.  I mean…there is an Oreo on the inside.”  I dodged a bullet on that one.

Today I was passing out paper for an assignment.  Since they always ask what we are doing right before I am about to explain the directions, I said preemptively, “I am going to pass out paper and I will explain the directions after you all get some.”  One of the boys, who happened to be right in front of me started giggling, because I said “get some.”  I pretended not to notice and tried with all my might not to giggle with him.  If a kid says something inappropriate, I will usually say something, unless I am trying to keep my composure, in which case I can only ignore it.  Props to you kid.

Back to school…

August 22, 2011

School starts tomorrow.  Most districts started today, but we get to start on Tuesday.  It is nice because it makes the week shorter.  This past week has been extremely busy getting ready.  I have been so exhausted every night.  I am glad that it is finally starting.

I hate the beginning of the year.  There is always a lot to do.  I also don’t like not knowing the kids.  In a few weeks, I will have things down and things will should be good.

This will be an interesting year.  I have two pre-AP (or as we use to say, honors) classes.  I also have some very large classes.  They range from 18 to 33 students.  I have 32 desks (I hade 29, but was able to find 3.  Desks are at a premium at my school).  Let’s hope there are some kids who moved and don’t show up tomorrow.

Like I said, this should be interesting.  Stay tuned.
